The Luzon bleeding-heart is a medium-sized, round-bodied ground dove with a short tail and long legs. It is slate grey above, with an iridescence that can look purple, blue or green, and black bands on the wings. The underparts are white, with a buff or chestnut belly and underwings and a red patch on the chest ringed with soft pink that looks like a fading blood stain. Males are slightly larger with a stronger red patch. Locally it is called punay or punalada (Wikipedia, general species account).

It is shy, secretive and quiet, and seldom leaves the ground except to nest; nesting has been recorded in May and June. The call is a single mournful coo, repeated, lasting one to two seconds. Unlike other bleeding-hearts it usually lays two eggs. Trapping for the pet trade and meat, logging and forest clearance threaten it, and it is illegal to hunt, capture or possess one under Philippine law (RA 9147). On this guide it is a forest-floor target on Mount Isarog (Wikipedia, citing published sources).
