The western Visayas hold some of the rarest animals in the country, including the Visayan warty pig, the Visayan spotted deer and the Negros bleeding-heart, and hornbills such as the Visayan hornbill and the writhed-billed hornbill. Mount Kanlaon on Negros and the Northwest Panay Peninsula are the main protected forests. Most of these species are hard to see in the wild and survive thanks to conservation breeding and local communities.
